I am Dr. Hazir Rahman, a microbiologist and academician by profession. Currently, working as Associate Professor and Chairman at the Department of Microbiology, Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.
It will be worthwhile to write few lines about my education and previous employment. Prior to doctoral studies, I did Master in Microbiology and worked as Junior Scientist (Microbiology) at Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). At PAEC, I feel that I have grown to adore research, and believe that, this field is more appropriate for me. I have therefore decided to pursue biological research, and select this profession as a career. With this objective in mind, I got PhD scholarship from Kohat University of Science and Technology and enrolled in the doctoral program at Georg-August University, Goettingen, Germany (www.uni-goettingen.de). My doctoral thesis was focused on Interactomics of mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) signal transduction pathway. Moreover, during my Ph.D, I have attended several international conferences in USA, UK, France, Switzerland and Germany to keep myself updated about the progress in the field and to interact with the pioneers.
Upon completion of my Ph.D, I have joined the Department of Microbiology, Kohat University of Science and Technology (KUST) to start teaching and research activities. I have established Proteomics and Leishmania research laboratories for students, and independently supervised BS, M.Phil and Ph.D research scholars. During my stay at KUST, I won five projects from national and international funding agencies. Besides these projects I got funding from KPK government to repair and upgrade the research equipments. I was also the team member in the establishment of Vector Born Disease Laboratory at KUST which was funded by NAMRO-3 and CDC USA. These efforts as a whole boosted the research infrastructure development and provided augmented training opportunities to the university students and researchers. In recognition of my contribution in teaching and research, the HEC has awarded me Best University Teacher Award in Dec 2016.
As previously stated that since January 2017, I have joined as Associate Professor and Chairman Department of Microbiology, Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan (AWKUM). It was just a new start of the said Department. So for, I have approved curriculum for BS, M.Phil and PhD programs from university statutory bodies and Higher education Commission of Pakistan. I have won one NRPU project and submitted several to funding bodies. I have published almost 60 research publications with impact facttor about 80. Currently we are working on diagnostic markers of infectious pathogens. In recognition of my work, Pakistan National Commission for UNESCO has nominated my name for the Carlos J Finlay UNESCO Award for Microbiology in 2017.
Apart from my contribution in research and teaching, I am effectively involved in organizing workshops and seminar related to microbiology and hygiene to improve public health awareness. In addition I have established strong collaboration with health professional particularly for purposes to understand the epidemiology of infectious diseases in the area.
I am confident that as microbiologist I can contribute to nourish the skills of young human resource that will be available to the local and international R and D sector. However our research on infectious diagnostics and community awareness |
